'I cannot do the usual five songs in every film'
Will she be third time lucky with Madhur Bandharkar'sFashion, releasing this Diwali? "I hope so," Priyanka says. "We have worked hard to make a good film. I hope people like it."
Fashion sees Priyanka play a model, along with Kangana Ranaut and Mugdha Godse.
The film is very crucial to Priyanka's career. All her 2008 releases so far -- Love Story 2050, Chamku, God Tussi Great Ho and Drona -- have been huge flops. Once a promising star, with big hits like Krrish and Aitraaz to her credit, Priyanka's career seems to be sliding down, thanks to her recent flops.
Ask her what is going wrong with her career, and Priyanka replies, "I have both hits and flops in my career. You never know which film will work and which will not. Each film comes with its own destiny.
"You have to take a gamble in your career," she adds. "I cannot wear saris and do the usual five songs in every film. I like playing different roles and doing films with different subjects."

Kodak 10 inch digital frame (SV 1020)
Approximate price: Rs. 9,500
The digital frame is a relatively recent product in the world of gizmos but the basic idea is very simple: an LCD screen with internal memory to store your photo collection. It's like a traditional photo frame except you can change the photos or cycle through different photos.
The 1020 comes with 128MB of internal memory which means it can fit more than a hundred photos (the exact number depends on the resolution). It also comes with speakers so you can set your favourite music to go along with your photo collection. Though it doesn't have a remote control, you can navigate through the various options using a touch interface.

Investing to WIN in stocks
When Warren Buffet, perhaps the greatest investor in the world, speaks on investing the world listens. Some days ago Buffet wrote a column in the New York Times, stating that he was putting his money in US stocks and explaining his reasons.
Though his article was about the US markets, much of his reasoning applies to Indian stocks as well; particularly since Indian markets are now so closely tied to their international counterparts. Buffet summarised his philosophy with the following phrase: 'Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful'.
What this means is that the right time to enter the markets is precisely when panic has driven down prices below theirfundamentals and when many blue-chip stocks are available for cheap. Conversely the time to be fearful was when the markets were rising from one high to another and valuations were moving far beyond what was reasonable.

What about the argument that investors are better off trying to time their investment and wait before moving into stocks? Buffet makes the simple point that no one knows when markets will turn. Furthermore, historically, markets have often recovered from downturns before the wider economy and general investor sentiment. Therefore investors who wait till all the risk is gone are likely to lose out on much of the return as well.
All this doesn't mean that investors can indiscriminately jump into markets today when valuations are low. Some companies, with unsound business models and too much leverage (borrowing far more than their repayment capacities) genuinely deserve lower stock prices. The point is that even much better companies with good managements and bright earnings (profits) prospects are being pounded because of the current widespread panic. Such stocks are being driven far below their fundamental value and are therefore likely to be good bargains.
To understand how it's possible to distinguish sound from unsound companies it helps to look at the ideas of one of Buffet's mentors, the famed investment writer, Benjamin Graham who developed many of the principles of value investing and fundamental analysis.
Market crisis: How to cope
What you should do in today's market
What if the Sensex falls below 10k? Still invest
Lump sum or SIP? How to invest in bad times?
How to play the markets now
The basic idea of value investment is that intelligent investors can figure out the intrinsic value of a company through careful analysis and then buy stocks which are trading below their intrinsic value. The analysis can take several forms: for example looking at the industry in which the company operates and its long term prospects as well as the management to see if it is pursuing an effective strategy for long-run profitability.
Value investing often looks at various financial ratios to decide whether a company is a good buy. One such measure is theprice/ earnings multiple which gives investors an idea of how a stock is priced relative to the company's annual profits. A company with sound financials and a low P/E indicates a good buy. Unfortunately this combination is quite rare during normal times when good companies typically trade at relatively high multiples of above 15 or even 20.
This is where the crisis and the panic sentiment comes in driving the prices of many good companies far below where they would normally trade meaning lower P/E multiples. This is why market panics provide smart investors a great opportunity to pick up good bargains.
Of course a multi-billionaire like Warren Buffet can afford to take risks that the average investors like you and I can't. Also the average investor may well have short-term liquidity (cash) needs for which s/he needs to keep funds at hand.
Therefore what you need to do is establish a time-horizon of your liquidity requirements. For any short-term requirements, say within a year or two, you should invest your money in safe assets like fixed deposits. However when it comes to the money you wish to devote for long-term investment needs, stocks should probably remain an important part of your portfolio.
It's important to note that no one, including Warren Buffet, knows when the market downturn will end. It may be in two months or two years. Therefore it's possible that you may continue to lose money for some time even if you invest in good companies trading at relatively low prices. However, provided you are patient and hold onto those stocks, the chances are high that eventually you will see excellent returns.
This is what investing your money to win is all about.

Anand half a point from retaining World crown
World champion Viswanathan Anand[Images] kept his three-point lead intact as he held off challenger Vladimir Kramnik [Images] to draw the ninth game on Sunday night.
The draw brought Anand closer to the world title, which he gets to keep on reaching 6.5 points.
The draw in the ninth game gave the Indian ace a 6-3 lead with three more games to go in the 12-game World Chess Championship final in Bonn.
Anand needs just one draw to win the title while Kramnik needs to win all the three remaining games to send the match into a tie-breaker.
The 45-move ninth game was the second longest after the 47-move win which Anand achieved with white in the sixth game.
Anand won three games, the third, fifth and sixth and drawn the rest.
The ninth game, with Anand playing white, saw an opening in the Queen's Gambit declined and in the anti-Meran variation. Kramnik held the stronger position towards the end, but was unable to convert that advantage into his first win. Anand played the end perfectly to hold the Russian at bay and keep his three-point lead.
The two players will share a purse of 1.5 million euros regardless of the result.
Kramnik, who has not won with black in the last two years, gave a strong display and did have Anand struggling but the Indian held on. Towards the end, Anand played perfect defence, while Kramnik was unable to squeeze the win he so desperately needed to keep some interest alive in the match.
Anand did make an attempt early to see if he could finish off the match in the ninth game itself. Kramnik accepted the challenge and entered the sharp Anti-Moscow Gambit. He finally got a novelty in on 12th move and got a sharp position that gave him a chance to play for a win, which he gladly accepted.
Black (Kramnik) held a good position for long but Anand managed to stay in and draw the game.
In the 10th game, Anand will have black pieces.

Preity Zinta declared best actress at Chicago film fest
Last Updated: October 27, 2008 17:23 IST
Preity Zinta, whose performance in Deepa Mehta's Heaven on Earth, received warm reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, has won the Silver Hugo Award for best actress at the 44th edition of Chicago International Film Festival.
The jury praised her 'for her strong yet subtle performance as a woman struggling to keep her dreams despite brutal realities.'
The film, which will inaugurate the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York on November 5, is the first film in which Mehta has explored the struggle of an immigrant bride in Canada [Images] and the choice she has to make to empower herself away from the abusive relationship in her new home. Married to an Indian resident in Canada, she has to use her imagination, wit and soul strength to keep her sanity and self-esteem.

At Chicago, the Gold Hugo for the Best Film at Chicago was awarded to the British-Irish film depicting an Irish Republican Army's prisoner in the UK who fasted into death. The film also featched for Silver Huge Award for Best Actor for Michael Fassbender for his self-sacrificing performance exemplifying the ideal of "being" rather than "acting."
Like Heaven on Earth, Hunger was also screened at the Toronto event.
Zinta had said at Toronto that when she is old, she would remember Heaven on Earth as her most accomplished film and the one that is closest to her heart. Though she shies away from darker films, she confessed, she took up Heaven on Earth because of the strength her character is endowed in the script. Besides, she had wanted to act in a Mehta film for a long time, she added.

The festival ends on November 9 with Taraporevala's Little Zizou; the directorial debut of Salaam Bombay! screenwriter Taraporevala will be presented by Nair who has worked with her in The Namesake [Images] and Salaam.
The MIAAC Film Festival will also host Danny Boyle's Toronto favorite Slumdog Millionaire and screen as a tribute to Chetan Anand his 1946 Cannes [Images] Gran Prix winner Neech Nagar (Lowly City), the first film scored by the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar.
